A Taste of "Gourmet Galaxy!"

This season’s batch of art, production, and marketing interns have been hard at work on an exciting new independent project: Gourmet Galaxy! As we gear up for the launch of the this delicious intergalactic game, we decided to give you just a little taste of what to expect.

Brought together by our passion for opening up educational opportunities for kids and appealing to their sense of curiosity and adventure, our brainstorm session was a salad bowl of creative ideas. After tossing together a well-blended mix of concepts, we hit on the idea of space chefs and intergalactic recipes.

Gourmet Galaxy follows Nutmeg, a space chef in training, as she explores a beautifully illustrated planet full of treats. Her mission: to gather enough ingredients to help her dad make a tasty (and healthy!) meal. Kids, you’re definitely going to want to try this at home!

We sat down with the production team to share what went on behind-the-scenes. From character creation to game design docs, we’re giving you the low-down on Gourmet Galaxy.

IMG_7627.jpeg

What was your role in the project?
Lucia: For this project I served as a producer. I worked with the team to make sure that we were aligned, on-track, organized and moving towards our big release! I also co-wrote the dialogue and was a part of determining the overall vision for the game. Nutmeg and Chef Poppyseed for the win!
Maged: I was a programmer!
Maggie: I was the artist and designer on this project. I created Nutmeg, Chef Poppyseed, all the backgrounds, and assets.
Sarah: I was the lead animator for Gourmet Galaxy. That means that I animated the walk cycles, idle animations, and pick up actions for game play. I also animated the cutscenes. I assisted in writing the script as well.
Allie: I was in charge of creating all the marketing materials for the game.

Where do you think the project really pushed you?
Maged: I have never worked with sprites as large as this, so it's been a challenge making it all work. I'm more used to pixel art and much smaller (literal) scale things.
Maggie: This project was the first time I worked in a professional environment, which was great learning experience! It really put my technical drawing skills and time management to the test. I only had about three months to design backgrounds and assets; I had never worked on a video game before, and I really learned a lot about the production pipeline.

Sarah: Making Gourmet Galaxy has pushed me to think more about organization and deadlines. I've had to think about the project and its contributors as a whole, working in a way that works best for the group at any time. I've learned to consider which animations need to come first so everyone has something to work on at any given time -- ie. I needed to get walk cycle and idle animations to our programmer (Maged) before working on a cutscene that can be added later. The production process for projects like ours is more clear to me, and I feel like I can use this knowledge in the future.

What is your favorite part of what you contributed? What is your favorite thing about the game overall?
Lucia: I was an advocate of the measuring portion of the game. Gourmet Galaxy is a whimsical adventure that ultimately leads to a tangible recipe that kids can make in real life with their families. The measuring station is important because it serves as the transition from a fictional world to a child's real kitchen. This feature contributes to math fluidity and self-confidence!
Maged: Coming up with a smart way to do dialogue that we can quickly edit, add new character portraits, attach to music, and the like all from one simple XML file has been fun.
Maggie: My favorite thing I did was design Nutmeg and Poppyseed! I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to blend the outfits of chefs and astronauts.
Sarah: My favorite part has been storyboarding and animating the opening sequence of the game. I am drawn to narratives so this gave me the opportunity to explore the development of our main characters in a fun and expressive way. Plus, frame by frame animation is a personal passion of mine, so it was nice to have the chance to incorporate it into Gourmet Galaxy.
Allie: I really loved watching the overall project evolve. I loved seeing the deliverables from the artists. They really set the tone of the game which I loved translating into marketing materials.

Head over to the internships page to learn more about FableVision’s internship program, and how to apply!

Meet the interns maged.jpeg

MAGED HAMDY
Position: Production Intern
Hometown: Wellesley, MA
School & Major: Computer Science at Wentworth Institute of Technology

What brought you to FableVision?
I was looking over places to apply with a friend, and as soon as I read out FableVision he yelled, "Zoombinis!" I had never heard of FableVision or Zoombinis, but after seeing that the job would encompass my passion for media, games, and development, I applied immediately (and learned all about the adorable blue Zoombinis!).

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I'm a production intern, but a game developer at heart, so seeing the tools and techniques of production in a studio is definitely the most exciting part and the most useful. All these are things I'm looking to start incorporating into my workflow and using to improve how I communicate with members of my team.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
I collect a LOT of stuffed animals (mostly game characters), but the one most near and dear to my heart is a stuffed Shy Guy from Mario. I'd definitely add one of them – they're adorable.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
First off, bobsledding sounds terrifying. Second off, I'd take the rest of the intern crew – Allie, Lucia, Claire, and Sarah. If I have to go down the mountain at 90 mph on an unrestricted and potentially dangerous sled, I'm taking them all down with me.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
A bass boosted nightcore dubstep remix of “Für Elise.”

What would you win a gold medal in?
Idling

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Chloe Kim just did two 1080s back to back, so it'd be cool to meet her.

Meet the interns Allie.jpg

ALLIE CATON
Position:
Marketing Intern
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School & Major: Communications at Boston University

What brought you to FableVision?
I discovered FableVision last summer and decided then that I needed to get involved in whatever way I could. I reached out to Sarah and Mitul at the beginning of the school year to chat about FableVision and the roles that they play here, and fell even more in love with everything FableVision. My meeting with them further solidified that I wanted to apply for the marketing internship, and here I am!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m most excited to be in such a creative environment! I love art and drawing, so it’s amazing to be surrounded by so many creators all the time! I’m hoping to really hone my writing and marketing skills for the creative industry, and get to flex my artistic muscles here and there.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
My plushie of Nook from Animal Crossing because I hope to be a money mogul like him someday.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Definitely Mitul because the air would streamline right over her head and help us go faster. I hear Mikaela is good at puns, so she would be a good one to recruit to come up with a killer team name. And finally, Sam B. because she is running in the Boston Marathon and that’s the type of athleticism I want on my gold-medal-winning bobsled team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
Any Ariana Grande song or a mashup of all of them.

What would you win a gold medal in?
Watching Tiny House Hunters instead of the Olympics.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Chloe Kim!

Meet the Interns Maggie.jpg

MAGGIE MAROTTA
Position:
Art Intern
Hometown: White Plains, NY
School and Major: Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design

What brought you to FableVision?
I came to FableVision because I want to create media and content for kids!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I'm most excited to work with other people. While I'm here, I want to improve my proficiency in Adobe Animate.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
A Transformers toy!

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
If I had a bobsled team I would recruit Mitul, Hannah, and Christina.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I would skate to "Golden Dandelions" by Barns Courtney.

What would you win a gold medal in?
I would probably win a gold medal in sleeping.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
I most want to meet Gabby Douglas.

Meet the Interns Sarah.jpg

SARAH NIKA
Position:
Art Intern
Hometown: Springfield, IL
School & Major: Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design

What brought you to FableVision?
I heard about the studio from one of my professors, so I decided to check it out. Since there aren’t too many narrative/character based animation studios in the Boston area, it definitely peaked my interest. When I saw they had an internship program, I immediately applied!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m really excited to work on the independent intern project. Now that I’ve learned a bit about how the studio goes about animating characters, I feel more confident and excited to put it into practice. I’m looking forward to learning more about how FableVision brings its characters and stories to life!

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
There absolutely needs to be more Avatar: The Last Airbender merchandise on the Wall of Inspiration. That show is what brought me to this career path, and it’s an amazing reference and inspiration for any artist.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Of the people I’ve gotten to know so far from FableVision, I’d have to choose Hannah, Christina, and Keith. I feel like they collectively have enough energy to make a 10/10 bobsled team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I would figure skate to Lily Allen’s cover of “Somewhere Only We Know,” only because it is soft, sweet, and makes me cry every time I listen to it. Although in hindsight, that may be an issue on the rink…

What would you win a gold medal in?
If I was actually an Olympic competitor, I’d probably do best at speed skating. I love moving at high speeds – or working fast at anything – so getting to fly around a rink all speedy would be…ideal.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
I would want to meet Mirai Nagasu because seeing her land a triple axel during her ice skating routine was incredible. I am proud and happy for her.

LUCIA BERLINER
Position:
Production Intern
Hometown: New Hamburg, NY
School & Major: Master of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education

What brought you to FableVision?
Sam B.'s fiancé (now husband)! I had a class with him and when he heard that I wanted to get into educational media he told me all about Sam and the wonderful place that is FableVision.

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I love everything! Overall, I'm really enjoying seeing the way that educational goals and genuinely awesome media products intersect. Balancing these two priorities is a true art form. I'm thrilled to see it in action and to better understand how both sides communicate and come to agreement.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
This.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Maged (for the hilarious commentary on the way down the hill), Sam B. (so we can be the stylish bobsled team), and Mitul (because she would obviously bring treats to throw to the adoring fans).

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
“Ice Ice Baby”...duh.

What would you win a gold medal in?
Best snowboard wipe out.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Michelle Kwan! I made a Michelle Kwan figure skating board game when I was eight and she obviously needs to know it exists. Rule number 1: Michelle always wins.

CLAIRE NATARO
Position:
Marketing Intern
Hometown: White Plains, NY
School & Major: Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University

What brought you to FableVision?
I first heard about FableVision from one of my professors at Tufts, in a class about children and mass media. As a Child Development major, I’ve always had an interest in kids and education, and as I read every inch of FableVision’s website while writing my application, I was captivated by how FableVision engages with educational content in new and innovative ways.

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m really excited to learn more about the ins and outs of marketing and maintaining social media pages. I’ve always loved to write, so I’m glad this position offers me the opportunity to write like crazy – whether it be 280 characters for a tweet or a full page for a blog post.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
The puzzle card game Set! A go-to on family game night when I was growing up.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Sarah, Mitul, and Allie. Marketing team = best team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I listened to Lorde’s album Melodrama on repeat for about two weeks straight when it was released last year, so I have to go with “Liability” from that album.

What would you win a gold medal in?
I could definitely make the podium if there was a competition for saving really yummy recipes on Pinterest and then never ever making them.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
From this Olympics I would love to meet US figure skater Adam Rippon – the first openly gay American winter Olympian. Rippon stood up for the LGBT community and authored my current favorite tweet.

Escape the ordinary and prepare for a grand adventure with FableVision’s summer 2017 interns. Each with their own vastly different skills, this season’s cohort has something extraordinary to offer.  Together, they’re hoping to create something truly special with an exciting independent project that’s in the works. In the meantime, grab some granola and your backpack to learn more about each intern’s path to FableVision, and how adventure fuels their creativity!

Curious about interning with FableVision? Art/animation and marketing positions are available during summer, spring, and fall! Check out the internships page for details.

Name: Ellie Liota
Hometown: New York, NY
School: Lesley University
Area of Study: Animation

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up at FableVision.
After spending four years in college “finding myself” and two more years after graduation “finding myself” some more, I was living in Portland, ME as a dishwasher at a bakery. My friend was leaving for her Masters in Art Therapy at Lesley University in Boston, and asked me if I wanted to tag along. I had wanted to try my hand at animation, so this was my chance at trying something new! I found an apartment, applied to Lesley, and found myself in Boston a few months later as a fresh new student (but actually old and not very fresh).

After my first two semesters as a part time student, I really wanted to get some real hands-on experience. My teacher told me about FableVision and as soon as I saw the work that came out of the studio I knew I wanted to get in on the action!

What do you hope to gain from working with FableVision?
I’m excited to experience what it’s like to work on a team—until now I’ve only worked on projects independently, and haven’t worked in a professional studio environment. There’s so much I don’t know, and I’m looking forward to learning everything that I can at FableVision.

What do you do during your free time? Any interesting hobbies?
A few months ago, I purchased a mini skeleton at CVS and my favorite thing to do is hide it somewhere in the house for my roommate to discover. It has become somewhat of an art. I also like trying to sew stuffed creatures (I say try because they often end in disaster), and I’m currently working on an octopus pillow!

What’s something that you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?
Last semester I created my own animated short! It’s completely ridiculous. It was pretty cool to be able to produce something that is completely my own.  It was also an incredible learning experience and it definitely gave me a newfound respect for animators.

What’s your favorite childhood memory of outdoor adventures?
I don’t know if I have one favorite memory but I did spend my weekends in upstate New York where I loved catching frogs, turtles, and turning over rocks to find bugs.  I also started something I called “The Deer Club” (I was the first and only member). I would go around eating different plants I found. Unfortunately the club was disbanded shortly after it was created when my mother found me feasting like a little gremlin on the flowers in her garden and promptly put an end to it. I also spent a decent amount of time behind my swing tending to my bug cemetery.

How do you think your love of adventure translates to your creative work?
Adventure is probably the most important part of my creative work. A huge part of being an artist is the emphasis on practice—keeping a sketchbook at your side at all times, drawing constantly, and challenging yourself to make new things. But it’s just as important to put everything down and explore—whether that’s experiencing another culture in a different country, going for a hike in the woods, or walking to your neighborhood farmer’s market and petting every dog you can find (I highly suggest the latter). I think the greatest ideas and inspiration for creative work come from experiencing the people and world around us, and you never know what you’re going to learn when you start an adventure, no matter how big or small.

Favorite Animal: Pitbull (Mr. Worldwide)
Favorite Biome: Temperate Deciduous Forest
Fun Fact: My front right tooth is fake because when I was younger I was pretending to be a whale and I dove into my bathtub, but bathtubs are not very deep.

Name: Devon George
Hometown: Nashua, NH
School: Montserrat College of Art
Area of Study: Illustration and Creative Writing

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up at FableVision.
I’m currently a senior at Montserrat College of Art this coming fall and I’m an illustration concentration who loves depicting nature, fantasy, science fiction, birds, bugs, etc. I learned about FableVision when a professor at my school mentioned their program to me. FableVision combined my interest in animation, animation preproduction, and visual development so I took a chance, applied, and was accepted!

What do you hope to gain from working with FableVision?
I wanted to learn more about animation, the process behind it, and how a studio functions. Now, with our intern project clarified, I’m adding game design and the integration of animation into the games themselves to my list. I’ve already begun to learn so much and I look forward to what the rest of this summer brings!

What do you do during your free time? Any interesting hobbies?
Apart from my art, I also play tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. I’m currently running a D&D game that started back in 2014. It’s a great test of my abilities as a storyteller and world builder. I’ve also created a few micro systems of my own and plan on creating one based around the construction of an observatory for my senior show.

What’s something that you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?
I participated in the 2017 Global Game Jam, creating the art for a game called Escape the Tide Pool. I’m very happy with the art I created during the three days that I had to produce it.

What’s your favorite childhood memory of outdoor adventures?
I lived in a rural neighborhood in NH when I was around six or seven. We had two acres of forest to explore and I remember tromping up the little stream near the back of my house. I had leaky water boots that slipped on the red roots on the sides of the creek. It was so magical and I secretly believed that fairies lived beside that stream.

How do you think your love of adventure translates to your creative work?
I like to try new things, whether that be a new medium, game, style of working, or creative project. Because of this, I have a broad range of things that I draw, write, create, and do. I want to go where no one has gone before!

Favorite Animal: Dragons
Favorite Biome: Taiga
Fun Fact: I had five wisdom teeth!

Name: Dan Schumacher
Hometown: Normal, IL
School: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Area of Study: Sport and Recreation Management

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up at FableVision.
Up until a few weeks ago I had lived in Central Illinois my entire life. I really loved it there and I think it was the perfect place for me growing up but I knew that I wanted to explore a different part of the country after college. About a year ago as I was considering my career options I made two pretty substantial decisions. First, I decided I wanted to eventually become a game developer and in order to accomplish that as soon as possible I decided to graduate a year early. So to cap off my degree I began searching for internships all over the country at park districts, sports teams, and game developers.

Thanks to Google, I came across FableVision’s internship program and immediately saw that this was a great opportunity to learn about all aspects of the studio development process as well as how to effectively market digital media. 1,000 miles, 17 hours, and 4 tanks of gas later, here I am at FableVision!

What do you hope to gain from working with FableVision?
First and foremost I want to learn how to effectively market digital media and online services. Throughout my research into independent game development one of the most consistent pieces of advice I’ve seen is that marketing is just as important as actually making the game. With FableVision, I hope to learn their process behind informing the public, engaging with them, and directing them towards specific projects .

The other piece that I really hope to gain from working with FableVision is a better understanding of how designers, developers, artists, producers, marketers, and executives all come together to create something cohesive that resonates with clients and consumers. So far in my brief time making games I’ve only worked independently so I’m loving the opportunity to see how work flows amongst each department and how everyone contributes in their own way to the end product.

What do you do during your free time? Any interesting hobbies?
I’m very competitive by nature so I love doing anything that lets me flex that muscle, so to speak. I absolutely love watching and playing sports of pretty much any kind, but soccer and basketball are my favorites. I’m a pretty avid gamer and when I can get some friends together, board games are another great avenue for competition. When I’m not in a competitive mood I love sitting down and developing my own games and prototypes.

What’s something that you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?
Although it isn’t anywhere remotely close to being finished I think I’m most proud of the game I’m making right now. All of my previous projects have been built strictly for my own educational purposes but now that I have a basic understanding of how to approach game development I’m thrilled to be working on the first game I actually plan on releasing. So far I’m really excited about how quickly I’ve made progress spending just a couple of hours each day on it. I definitely feel that my progress is a reflection of everything that I’ve learned from all of my previous projects and that’s why I’m so proud of this one.

What’s your favorite childhood memory of outdoor adventures?
One of my favorite activities as a kid was getting together with my friends and camping out in the woods of Central Illinois. Most of where we grew up really is just corn and soybean fields so camping in the woods always felt like a real adventure. From whipping up s’mores, hiking, kayaking, swimming, telling stories, playing games we made up, and visiting Starved Rock there are just too many great memories to single out a favorite one.

How do you think your love of adventure translates to your creative work?
Part of adventuring is that you have an idea of what you want to accomplish but you never know the path you’ll take. I like to apply that thought to my creative process by having a goal in mind but making up the details as I go. I also think it’s important to understand that every adventure isn’t always going to end in success. I would love it if everything I created was “successful” but I know that it takes hard work (and some luck) to reach that point. I look at each failure as an opportunity for me to learn from my mistakes and understand how to approach my next challenge differently to ensure that I continue improving and learning.

Favorite Animal: American Bison AKA our National Mammal (thanks Obama!)
Favorite Biome:  Temperate Forest
Fun Fact: I’m a 3-time (defending) University of Illinois Intramural Dodgeball Champion

Meet the Interns! Summer 2016 Edition

The FableVision Studios Summer Interns!

Summer is in full swing, ladies and gentlemen, and the Summer 2016 interns are ready to bring their variety of talents and skills to FableVision Studios. Coming from all corners of the Boston community, we represent Boston College, Boston University, Lesley University, and Fitchburg State University. In the spirit of collaboration, for the first time, the interns from the art and marketing departments are teaming up to craft an ambitious independent project over the course of the summer (more on that later, stay tuned!). This year’s cohort of junior FableVisionaries are quite the bunch, so read on to get to know us, how we got here, and why we’re all at least a little weird.

Courtney_Copelin_Internvision

Courtney Copelin

Marketing Intern

  • Hometown: New Orleans, LA
  • Education: Boston College, '17
  • Major: Applied Psychology and Human Development; Communication, Women and Gender Studies minor

What drew you to FableVision? Why did you want to intern here?

More than anything, I love that FableVision is a company where “work” is fun. Every member of the team here is super talented and wonderful at what they do, and have so much fun while doing it! I love that the company strongly emphasizes the idea that play is important at every age. The collaborative style of this work environment makes each day enjoyable and makes me feel like I’m living with a greater purpose.

I was drawn to FableVision because the mission of this company is a perfect integration of my two majors! I have been interested in "helping professions" since I was a young girl, and I saw this internship as an opportunity to teach me a new perspective. I knew that FableVision would allow me to explore my own career interests, especially the independent project component of the internship. This project will be a personalized component of my internship experience where I will be able to develop and utilize my skills in a way allows me to make a significant contribution that will benefit the community and myself.

How does your major apply to the work you will do here?

I’ve had the pleasure of taking a writing intensive course called “Children and the Media” in the spring semester of my junior year, which not only improved my ability to write more effectively, but also taught me to identify the most relevant information with respect to children’s development, which is critical for my internship position at FableVision.

I was honestly intimidated at first because the other interns are studying specific majors that seemed to better prepare them for professions in media. While they have concrete portfolios to show off their work, I only had research papers. But, I have learned that this contrast is important and extremely useful because both skill sets are necessary in order to produce a fantastic project.

What is the most valuable skill you are striving to gain/improve throughout your internship experience?

My goal is to communicate effectively in a collaborative, intimate setting and then speak on behalf of the FableVision team to a wider audience describing the work we've done. By the end of my internship, I want to know how to effectively use an active, assertive voice without sounding aggressive. This is a critical tool in marketing and is also a critical asset across many contexts—professionally, academically, and personally.

I am confident that the collaborative work experience at FableVision will definitely foster this development. The structure of this environment will allow me to listen and speak to all team members consisting of artists, developers, animators, designers, creative strategists, and project managers. I am super excited to learn about the production of children’s media beyond my specific focus!

If you had free choice to do any project that you want, what would you chose to do?

This a tough question for me to answer, because I perceive life in general as one huge project. Every project involves a mission, and my mission is to make a positive impact on the world in the grandest way I possibly can. While this dream may seem generic, I wholeheartedly believe in its importance. I want to change children's lives and give them a better future by inspiring them and moving them to action. It really is true: children are our future; it is our job to empower them in order to make a lasting impact on this world for generations to come. There is always room for growth and I know this project will never be complete, but I want to be a part of the solution. I am discerning what role I can play in this movement, but I am confident and hopeful that I will discover what my greatest purpose is in that process.

What is your Harry Potter house?

Hufflepuff

Favorite kids show growing up?

All That

Would you rather listen to music for the rest of your life and not watch TV OR watch TV for the rest of your life but not have music? Why?

HotsauceSwag_InternVision_Courtney

I would rather listen to music and not have TV because music is therapeutic and uplifting. Plus, I have a pretty vivid imagination, so I could create stories and narratives through music instead of watching someone else's vision on screen :)

Why are you weird?

I bring my New Orleans Creole food seasoning with me wherever I go (well, at least while I’m living in the North East.)

Mimi Chiu

Art Intern

  • Hometown: Twinsburg, OH
  • Education: Boston University, '17
  • Major: Graphic Design
  • Portfolio: Chiudesigns.com

What drew you to FableVision? Why did you want to intern here?

I actually met a few FableVision artists at a Drink and Draw in Boston a few months ago and not only did they tell me about their company, but also were extremely friendly and warm. They made FableVision sound like a great place to work because of its sincere goals and attitude. Since I wanted to improve my animation and art skills in a welcoming environment, I applied immediately!

How does your major apply to the work you will do here?

Graphic Design  encompasses such a wide range of areas from poster design to motion graphics. All of the skills from my major such as color theory, composition, and motion has really helped me create art here.

"Lost Dog" by Mimi Chiu

"Lost Dog" by Mimi Chiu

What is the most valuable skill you are striving to gain/improve throughout your internship experience?

I'm hoping to gain a stronger ground in animation and illustration while getting studio experience to learn how people, such as artists and project managers, communicate and work together to complete projects.

If you had free choice to do any project that you want, what would you chose to do?

I would love to create an interactive comic! I love comics, but I also love video games, so I think it'd be an interesting experiment to combine the two!

What is your Harry Potter house?

Hufflepuff

Favorite kids show growing up?

The Powerpuff Girls

Would you rather listen to music for the rest of your life and not watch TV OR watch TV for the rest of your life but not have music? Why?

I would rather watch TV for the rest of my life! I love music, but I am more visually inclined and I get more joy out of seeing beautiful animation, stories, and characters.

Why are you weird?

Basically everything I own is pink. I really really really love pink, so everything from my laptop to my stuffed animals to nearly my entire wardrobe is pink. I think it's the cutest color and it makes choices really easy for me! Plus everything matches now.

I really enjoyed the style of their work and feel their child friendly approach and educational productions would be fun to see up close and learn from.

How does your major apply to the work you will do here?

I am currently studying animation and plan to learn a lot more about the process and software used during my time at FableVision.

What is the most valuable skill you are striving to gain/improve throughout your internship experience?

I want to be able to properly animate characters in a professional amount of time as well as have a better understanding for the process and environment. I like a challenge and I feel that the work at FableVision would be a good match.

If you had free choice to do any project that you want, what would you chose to do?

I like to do comics in my free time so it would be pretty cool to make an interactive comic or a short of a comic's characters coming to life through the panels.

Favorite kids show growing up?

It's a tie between Teen Titans and Franklin.

Would you rather listen to music for the rest of your life and not watch TV OR watch TV for the rest of your life but not have music? Why?

I'd rather listen to music over watching TV. I can listen to music while doing just about anything. I also use music to help me figure out stories or characters for my projects.

Why are you weird?

My eyebrows have a mind of their own.

What drew you to FableVision? Why did you want to intern here?

I'm really interested in how and why art gets made, as well as how art can be informative and socially responsible as well as beautiful--which is exactly the kind of content FableVision makes! There's so much room in our lives for art and entertainment that teaches, inspires, and makes our daily lives better. When I found out through my girlfriend that there were internship possibilities here, I leaped at the chance!

How does your major apply to the work you will do here?

Majoring in game design, with a focus on the business side of things, gives me insight on both sides of the development-marketing equation; I know (to a limited degree!) how the games, websites, animations, etc. get made, so now I get to work on the other half. I want to do the back-end work like marketing, research, and operations so that the artists can focus on doing what they do best!

What is the most valuable skill you are striving to gain/improve throughout your internship experience?

I've never worked in an office! So this is a crash course in that sort of working environment, as well as the operations and organization side of that. If I had to pick one skill, it'd be communication between me, my team members, and other team members! So many humans to talk to, so many checklists.

If you had free choice to do any project that you want, what would you chose to do?

Well, outside of my internship on FableVision I'm working on making a small game every month, as well as writing a larger interactive-fiction piece over the summer! It's going well so far, but we'll see how I feel in August.

Would you rather listen to music for the rest of your life and not watch TV OR watch TV for the rest of your life but not have music? Why?

THIS IS SO DIFFICULT. I love listening to music while I work, but I could replace that with white noise; I can't live without TV because stories are my source of life-energy and inspiration, so TV it must be!

Why are you weird?

If you'll let me get back to you, I have an itemized list.
