It’s Thyme to Meet the Spring 2020 Interns!

Intern Logo 2.png

It may not be spring quite yet here in Boston, but a new group of spring interns have found their way to FableVision Studios! Their collective technical, art, marketing, and production skills—and shared love for the movie Ratatouille—are surely a recipe for success. We’re excited to see what masterpieces they cook up this semester! Read on to learn more about their internship goals, Boston-area recommendations, and who inspires them.

School & Major: Tufts University, Computer Science and American Studies (race and ethnic studies)
Position: Technical Intern

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
When I was a senior in high school, my graphic design teacher suggested I check out FableVision because she knew I’d fall in love with their work and mission. Since then, I’ve been lurking on the InternVision blog, marveling at all the past intern projects, and reaching out to a few former interns. One of the interns I contacted was a technical intern who worked with Brian Grossman and had a really valuable experience. I applied, and it feels pretty surreal to be featured here now as an intern!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?

  • Gain familiarity with the Unity game engine, plugins, and the scripting languages Unity supports as I develop 2D games with the intern team

  • Use PHP, MySQL, and the Laravel web framework to build a working web application

  • Effectively and clearly communicate technical ideas/processes to team members

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My goal is to use my technical and creative skills to support the kind of empowering storytelling, education, and media that FableVision produces every single day. FableVision's team is constantly experimenting with new and emerging technologies, and in the first month I've already learned so much about the tech behind animation and games.

More About Esther!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Crêpes! I have many fond memories of my family gathered around the dining room table rolling fresh fruit, whipped cream, and Nutella into warm, buttery crepes.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: I love spending time in Chinatown. I grew up going to church in the neighborhood and often join community organizing efforts, learn Asian American histories, and share warm meals with people I love.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: "Feel The Vibe" by BJ The Chicago Kid. Homey and warm.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: My mama. She is my biggest support and best friend.

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I actually found the internship through the other spring Art & Animation Intern, Natalie! We've been friends for a long time now, and she told me about the internship a little while back. I figured I would go for it and apply, and I was lucky enough to get the position!

spring-break-barcelona-174+-+Gregory+Bond.jpg

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
I want to develop my animation and digital illustration skills while working at FableVision this semester. Animation and digital illustration have both always interested me, but were areas that I couldn't really study in my program at BU. So I'm super grateful that I can work on these skills at FableVision!

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
Participating in the Art & Animation Internship is awesome because I'm getting a ton of insight into how a professional animation studio functions! I'm interested specifically in children's entertainment, so FableVision is fantastic, as I'm getting a lot of exposure to children's educational animation.

More About Greg!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: To be honest, I'm not great at cooking. My go-to is usually turkey burgers, or some kind of fun bagel sandwich!

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: My absolute favorite place in Boston is the New England Aquarium. I used to go all the time when I was a kid, and I can't help but feel so inspired whenever I visit now.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: I've actually been getting really into K-Pop recently! Specifically, I can't stop listening to “Baby” by ASTRO.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: I have always looked up to the older members in my a cappella group at BU, In Achord! Ever since I was a freshman, I've always gone to them for advice, support, and really everything. They've definitely become my family at BU!

Janina Huang

Hometown: Boston, MA
School & Major: Boston University, English and Communication (emphasis in advertising)
Position: Marketing Intern

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I learned about FableVision my senior year of high school! My sister and I were researching animation studios in Boston, and FableVision popped up. When I saw the 2015 relaunch of Zoombinis in the FableVision portfolio, a game I loved as a kid, I was immediately interested. I’ve been following the studio and InternVision ever since. Now that I’m a senior in college, it’s exciting and pretty surreal to be here!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Social media writing! It can be daunting to stare down a blank piece of paper (or Google Doc), and I’m working on getting over that initial block and just writing the tweet! I’ve been having a blast so far, and I’ve learned so much from the edits Monica and Sarah give me. I’m also looking forward to our intern project! Developing and writing for games has been a dream of mine for a while now, and I’m so happy to see each of us interns shine in our respective roles.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My dream is to put as much good into the world as possible, so being at FableVision is certainly helping! On a professional level, FableVision’s mission and work embody so many things I care about: storytelling, education, and empathy, to name a few. Just being in the studio, listening to and learning from the people who work on these projects, is kind of the dream!

More About Janina!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Lately, I’ve been making a lot of soup.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum! It’s such a unique art museum with an interesting history.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “Rain” by Ben Platt

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: My high school English teacher and advisor, Dr. Proll! A major part of who I am—from my choice of study, to my love of writing, to the way I think about the world—is because of her wisdom and guidance.

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I was following an artist on Twitter who had done an internship at FableVision previously and I found out about it after looking through their page! After that point, I got a bit hooked on InternVision and would constantly keep an eye out for updates and to see what all the interns were working on each semester.

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Learning how to work creatively as part of a bigger team! Making independent artwork for college classes is really different from being a part of a group project that involves pitching ideas, creating placeholder art, helping with scripts, and so many different moving parts for all areas of production. It’s a lot to juggle at once, but that’s part of the fun.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
This internship is definitely helping me improve my teamwork and collaboration skills, which are really important parts of any field. Plus I’m getting to work on my art in a different setting than what I’m used to, which is great for improving my skills.

More About Natalie!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: So it’s kind of bold of me to imply that I can make any dish *well*, but I really enjoy making crêpes, especially with my dad.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: This changes daily, but I think I have to go with getting brunch and/or coffee with friends (especially at @union; this is free promo. I love that restaurant), and then spending the day just goofing around pretty much anywhere.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: Right now it would have to be “Curiosity” by Amber Liu and “How To Love” by Day6!

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: Rachel Bloom! For those who don’t know her, she wrote and starred in the TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is a musical comedy and probably my favorite show of all time. It really inspires me that she was able to combine her love of acting and writing to basically live the best of both worlds. I hope to be able to do that with my own passions someday.

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
The lighthearted, passionate attitude in everything they do!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
I want to understand how to take client-driven creative projects from start to finish and it would be GREAT to get some familiarity with Unity and visual design.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
I dream of working on animated content for the clients that FableVision has worked with for years. This is my first time seeing how a studio of this caliber gets their projects done, and I feel like I'm stepping closer to my goals just by being here!

More About Rubin!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Chocolate. Chip. Banana. Bread.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: Scurry about in dark alleys.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “Coffee Shop” by Pizzagirl.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: I’m the oldest, and the tallest, of four kids. But I look up to my brother and sisters. They’re my biggest role models. If they see this, they’ll never let me live it down…

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
The name has definitely been floating around in our program at Harvard for a while now as a prestigious internship site for those who love and desire more experience in educational media. I shot my shot, and look where I am now!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Until now, I have dwelled mostly in the film marketing sphere. This is my first real professional chance to dig into the production side, and I'm beyond excited to get that landscape purview as well as the detailed hands-on experience.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My dream...is to be in the room where it happens. More specifically, to be in the room of strategy and production when the day comes for a pilot children's TV show with Asian American characters and culture.

More About Sophie!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: I'm actually much more of a baker than a cook. And I do think my banana bread and carrot cake recipes aren't all that shabby!

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: The Seaport District gives me proximity to water. The South End has personality. And I adore walking through (and getting lost in) the Arboretum. I also love how I can walk anywhere with some good music, look up at the stars, and just breathe in the air. Not a Boston-specific thing, but it's a favorite life thing I do.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “La La Lost You” (the acoustic version) by NIKI, 88rising

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: Hands down, my mom. My life is inconceivably better for her wisdom and love in it.

Antonia Januszewicz

Technical Intern

  • Hometown: Brighton, MA

  • Education: Winsor School ‘19

  • Favorite Subject: History

What’s your [hero’s] journey to FableVision story?
I was looking for an internship available for high school students, and Brian Grossman was looking for an intern. Our mutual friend put us in touch.

What superpowers do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
Experience! I also hope to understand the intricacies of web development known as Javascript frameworks and AMFPHP. Of course, that can only happen once I figure out how to read the files for the current website — fingers crossed!

How do you unwind after a day of heroic feats at the studio?
I read unofficial translations of Chinese light novels. I also watch Detective Conan and at some point hope to make it through all 906 episodes.

What character from The Incredibles are you and why?
Violet, because I’m shy and tend to stick to the back of the group

Antonia.png
  • Favorite pasta: Angel hair

  • Dream theatrical role: King Azaz in The Phantom Tollbooth

  • Your super theme song: "Deszcz na betonie" by Taco Hemingway

  • Ideal Superpower: Probability manipulation. I need something to fix my horrible luck.

  • Television character you identify with: Kaito Kuroba from Detective Conan or Magic Kaito.

  • Your kryptonite: Really good books. If I get into one, I’m not coming out ‘til I finish it.

Avital Dayanim

Marketing Intern

What’s your [hero’s] journey to FableVision story?
I am always looking for opportunities to merge my love of art, writing, and psychology, and a FableVision internship provided the perfect intersection. I was raised on PBS Kids and Fantasia 2000, and I’m constantly reminded of the power of stories — those which are presented to us, and those we construct ourselves. Companies like FableVision have the remarkable capacity to present stories to young audiences who, in turn, look to these stories in formulating their understanding of the world and how to interact with it, and I was so excited to play a part in that process.

What superpowers do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
I’m looking forward to learning the ins and outs of marketing, and to experiment with writing outside of an academic context; social media requires an entirely new level of concision and attention to audience. I’m also excited to learn more about the world of animation and improve my time management skills.

How do you unwind after a day of heroic feats at the studio?
I write poetry and do a lot of journaling/illustration. Sometimes I sing jazz standards with my dad and his band at obscure Bar Mitzvahs. Then we binge-watch Westworld.

What character from The Incredibles are you and why?
Probably Kari the babysitter because I’m perpetually overwhelmed.

Avital.png
  • Favorite pasta: Bowtie

  • Dream theatrical role: Eponine in Les Misérables

  • Your super theme song: "Bravado" by Lorde

  • Ideal superpower: Ability to conjure dark chocolate in any setting

  • Television character you identify with: Elaine Benes from Seinfeld

  • Your kryptonite: Quality ink pens

Art Intern

  • Hometown: Prospect, PA

  • Education: Rochester Institute of Technology ‘19

  • Major: Animation

  • Portfolio: bit.ly/DerekGieraltowski

What’s your [hero’s] journey to FableVision story?
My friend Alyssa heard about the internship, and she encouraged me to apply! I applied last year and had an interview, but unfortunately didn’t get the position. I’m here now, though — never give up!

What superpowers do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
I’m excited to work on a variety of different animated projects. One of the coolest things to me is that FableVision works on games and films, and I’m excited to explore aspects of both!

How do you unwind after a day of heroic feats at the studio?
I like to write songs, and I’m a mediocre (but competitive) Super Smash Bros. player. I’m also the music director of RIT’s all-male collegiate a cappella group, Eight Beat Measure. It requires a lot of time and effort, but it’s the most fun in the world!

What character from The Incredibles are you and why?
Jack-Jack, because I’m indecisive.

  • Favorite pasta: Fettuccine

  • Dream theatrical role: SpongeBob in SpongeBob the Musical or Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen

  • Your super theme song: "Shabadoobie" by Taku Inoue

  • Ideal superpower: Bringing inanimate objects to life, so I’ll never be lonely (my answer changes depending on when you ask).

  • Television character you identify with: Finn the Human from Adventure Time

  • Your kryptonite: Takeout

Josh Artman

Marketing Intern

  • Hometown: Metuchen, NJ

  • Education: Boston College ‘19

  • Major: Communication

  • Portfolio: joshartman.net

What’s your [hero’s] journey to FableVision story?
I first came across FableVision when I was researching media companies in Boston last year. As someone who grew up playing educational computer games (including the original Zoombinis!), I knew I had to apply for an internship. So I started reading the FableVision blog, followed (stalked?) the company on social media, and interviewed with Sarah Ditkoff and Mitul Daiyan in April. How’s that for a Logical Journey?

What superpowers do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
I’m really excited to be working in a media production studio. There’s so much creative energy here, and everyone is super talented and funny! I’m hoping it’ll all rub off on me and that I’ll gain some project management experience too.

How do you unwind after a day of heroic feats at the studio?
This summer I’m helping a friend record a podcast series, DJing at my campus radio station, and making comedy videos for the satire paper at BC. When not creating content, I like to watch movies and go on runs!

What character from The Incredibles are you and why?
Frozone, because I too do not know where my super suit is.

Josh.png
  • Favorite pasta: Tagliatelle

  • Dream theatrical role: The Black Knight in Spamalot

  • Your super theme song: "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc.

  • Ideal superpower: Super whistling! I can sort of whistle now but I’d love to really control soundwaves. Have no fear, Boston — the Whistler is here!

  • Television character that you identify with: Philip J. Fry from Futurama

  • Your kryptonite: Charley horses

Sam Xu

Art Intern

  • Hometown: Belmont, MA

  • Education: Maryland Institute College of Art ‘19

  • Major: Illustration

  • Portfolio: samxuart.com

What’s your [hero’s] journey to FableVision story?
I’ve done a few simple animated illustrations on my own and I was super excited to learn more as an animation studio intern. My school’s career center put me in touch with Bob FlynnHannah O’Neal, and Keith Zoo here at FableVision, and I was able to visit the studio when I went home to Boston for winter break! As soon as I set foot in the studio, I absolutely fell in love with the environment and community here.

What superpowers do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
On top of learning the ropes of animating and designing for animation, I’m definitely looking forward to working with a team and seeing a collaborative project through from start to finish, gaining communication skills, and learning to work efficiently within professional timeframes!

Sam's Junior Thesis Project

Sam's Junior Thesis Project

How do you unwind after a day of heroic feats at the studio?
When I’m not saving lives in the studio, I love to watch movies with friends, make incredibly specific Spotify playlists, and I still draw for fun! I also bike and walk my cat in the backyard when the weather is nice.

What character from The Incredibles are you and why?
Voyd, because I also trip over myself when I talk to women.

Meet the interns maged.jpeg

MAGED HAMDY
Position: Production Intern
Hometown: Wellesley, MA
School & Major: Computer Science at Wentworth Institute of Technology

What brought you to FableVision?
I was looking over places to apply with a friend, and as soon as I read out FableVision he yelled, "Zoombinis!" I had never heard of FableVision or Zoombinis, but after seeing that the job would encompass my passion for media, games, and development, I applied immediately (and learned all about the adorable blue Zoombinis!).

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I'm a production intern, but a game developer at heart, so seeing the tools and techniques of production in a studio is definitely the most exciting part and the most useful. All these are things I'm looking to start incorporating into my workflow and using to improve how I communicate with members of my team.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
I collect a LOT of stuffed animals (mostly game characters), but the one most near and dear to my heart is a stuffed Shy Guy from Mario. I'd definitely add one of them – they're adorable.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
First off, bobsledding sounds terrifying. Second off, I'd take the rest of the intern crew – Allie, Lucia, Claire, and Sarah. If I have to go down the mountain at 90 mph on an unrestricted and potentially dangerous sled, I'm taking them all down with me.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
A bass boosted nightcore dubstep remix of “Für Elise.”

What would you win a gold medal in?
Idling

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Chloe Kim just did two 1080s back to back, so it'd be cool to meet her.

Meet the interns Allie.jpg

ALLIE CATON
Position:
Marketing Intern
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
School & Major: Communications at Boston University

What brought you to FableVision?
I discovered FableVision last summer and decided then that I needed to get involved in whatever way I could. I reached out to Sarah and Mitul at the beginning of the school year to chat about FableVision and the roles that they play here, and fell even more in love with everything FableVision. My meeting with them further solidified that I wanted to apply for the marketing internship, and here I am!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m most excited to be in such a creative environment! I love art and drawing, so it’s amazing to be surrounded by so many creators all the time! I’m hoping to really hone my writing and marketing skills for the creative industry, and get to flex my artistic muscles here and there.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
My plushie of Nook from Animal Crossing because I hope to be a money mogul like him someday.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Definitely Mitul because the air would streamline right over her head and help us go faster. I hear Mikaela is good at puns, so she would be a good one to recruit to come up with a killer team name. And finally, Sam B. because she is running in the Boston Marathon and that’s the type of athleticism I want on my gold-medal-winning bobsled team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
Any Ariana Grande song or a mashup of all of them.

What would you win a gold medal in?
Watching Tiny House Hunters instead of the Olympics.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Chloe Kim!

Meet the Interns Maggie.jpg

MAGGIE MAROTTA
Position:
Art Intern
Hometown: White Plains, NY
School and Major: Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design

What brought you to FableVision?
I came to FableVision because I want to create media and content for kids!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I'm most excited to work with other people. While I'm here, I want to improve my proficiency in Adobe Animate.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
A Transformers toy!

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
If I had a bobsled team I would recruit Mitul, Hannah, and Christina.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I would skate to "Golden Dandelions" by Barns Courtney.

What would you win a gold medal in?
I would probably win a gold medal in sleeping.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
I most want to meet Gabby Douglas.

Meet the Interns Sarah.jpg

SARAH NIKA
Position:
Art Intern
Hometown: Springfield, IL
School & Major: Animation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design

What brought you to FableVision?
I heard about the studio from one of my professors, so I decided to check it out. Since there aren’t too many narrative/character based animation studios in the Boston area, it definitely peaked my interest. When I saw they had an internship program, I immediately applied!

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m really excited to work on the independent intern project. Now that I’ve learned a bit about how the studio goes about animating characters, I feel more confident and excited to put it into practice. I’m looking forward to learning more about how FableVision brings its characters and stories to life!

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
There absolutely needs to be more Avatar: The Last Airbender merchandise on the Wall of Inspiration. That show is what brought me to this career path, and it’s an amazing reference and inspiration for any artist.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Of the people I’ve gotten to know so far from FableVision, I’d have to choose Hannah, Christina, and Keith. I feel like they collectively have enough energy to make a 10/10 bobsled team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I would figure skate to Lily Allen’s cover of “Somewhere Only We Know,” only because it is soft, sweet, and makes me cry every time I listen to it. Although in hindsight, that may be an issue on the rink…

What would you win a gold medal in?
If I was actually an Olympic competitor, I’d probably do best at speed skating. I love moving at high speeds – or working fast at anything – so getting to fly around a rink all speedy would be…ideal.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
I would want to meet Mirai Nagasu because seeing her land a triple axel during her ice skating routine was incredible. I am proud and happy for her.

LUCIA BERLINER
Position:
Production Intern
Hometown: New Hamburg, NY
School & Major: Master of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education

What brought you to FableVision?
Sam B.'s fiancé (now husband)! I had a class with him and when he heard that I wanted to get into educational media he told me all about Sam and the wonderful place that is FableVision.

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I love everything! Overall, I'm really enjoying seeing the way that educational goals and genuinely awesome media products intersect. Balancing these two priorities is a true art form. I'm thrilled to see it in action and to better understand how both sides communicate and come to agreement.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
This.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Maged (for the hilarious commentary on the way down the hill), Sam B. (so we can be the stylish bobsled team), and Mitul (because she would obviously bring treats to throw to the adoring fans).

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
“Ice Ice Baby”...duh.

What would you win a gold medal in?
Best snowboard wipe out.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
Michelle Kwan! I made a Michelle Kwan figure skating board game when I was eight and she obviously needs to know it exists. Rule number 1: Michelle always wins.

CLAIRE NATARO
Position:
Marketing Intern
Hometown: White Plains, NY
School & Major: Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University

What brought you to FableVision?
I first heard about FableVision from one of my professors at Tufts, in a class about children and mass media. As a Child Development major, I’ve always had an interest in kids and education, and as I read every inch of FableVision’s website while writing my application, I was captivated by how FableVision engages with educational content in new and innovative ways.

What part of your job are you most excited about and what do you hope to learn in your position?
I’m really excited to learn more about the ins and outs of marketing and maintaining social media pages. I’ve always loved to write, so I’m glad this position offers me the opportunity to write like crazy – whether it be 280 characters for a tweet or a full page for a blog post.

If you could add something to the Wall of Inspiration, what would you add?
The puzzle card game Set! A go-to on family game night when I was growing up.

If you could pick three people from FableVision to join your bobsledding team for the Winter Olympics, who would you pick?
Sarah, Mitul, and Allie. Marketing team = best team.

What song would you pair your figure skating routine to?
I listened to Lorde’s album Melodrama on repeat for about two weeks straight when it was released last year, so I have to go with “Liability” from that album.

What would you win a gold medal in?
I could definitely make the podium if there was a competition for saving really yummy recipes on Pinterest and then never ever making them.

Which Olympic athlete would you most want to meet?
From this Olympics I would love to meet US figure skater Adam Rippon – the first openly gay American winter Olympian. Rippon stood up for the LGBT community and authored my current favorite tweet.

Meet FableVision's Fall 2016 Interns!

FableVision Studios' Fall 2016 interns. From left: Adam Reed, Jen Sanchez, and Tessa Berliner.

A new school year at Hogwarts (or, uh, FableVision Studios) means a fresh batch of interns, and the fall 2016 interns are nothing to sneeze at. These FableFirst Years may come from opposite coasts (with a quick pitstop in the Midwest), but they’re joining forces to bring a new culture — and a whole lot of food — to FableVision Studios. Despite some major identity crises caused by the updated Pottermore Hogwarts sorting hat quiz, these three have proved that they’ve got pretty magical abilities in the studio. After only a month, they’ve spiced things up with gummy bears, empanadas, an exclusive cookbook (more on that later), and just a dash of magic.

FableVisionaries, wizards, and friends alike, get ready to fall for this semester’s FableVision interns!

Why do you consider yourself a Gryffindor?
I like to look at the pros and the cons of the Hogwarts houses a lot, especially the ones usually considered “perfect.” I can be incredibly stubborn but I’ve also found that I fit best in leadership positions. I can be a bit of an idealist but I also have a habit of looking at the world in black and white rather than with theoretical grey areas. I also definitely subscribe to the “Gryffindor is best” way of thinking, which is 100% just a Gryffindor belief.

What's your favorite Harry Potter book and movie?
Favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban because it introduces Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. Favorite movie is Sorcerer’s Stone because of all of the nostalgia it carries with it.

How does being a Gryffindor affect the way you work?
I have a tendency to take the lead on group projects or in student groups — I even directed a musical last fall — though that doesn’t mean I don’t take advice from others. Harry would’ve gotten nowhere if he didn’t have Hermione’s research and logic and Ron’s understanding of the wizarding world! I also think that the Gryffindor sense of right and wrong binds me to the timeframes, schedules, and deadlines I perpetually set for myself. Who knows what would happen if I didn’t follow them? (I do. It’s not pretty.)

Favorite Harry Potter quote?
“One can never have enough socks.” ― Albus Dumbledore

What do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
I’m honestly just excited to be surrounded by so many creative, multi-faceted people. When I work on games teams in school I usually wear a few different hats myself as director, producer, designer, and writer. I’m hoping to learn from interdisciplinary professionals here at FableVision and figure out not only what makes them tick but also what about their positions makes them happy.

Why do you consider yourself a Hufflepuff?
I feel like I'm a Hufflepuff because I value patience, working hard, and being a nice person, above all else. I think the whole ambition aspect of Slytherin is what got me sorted in there, haha.

What's your favorite Harry Potter book and movie?
My favorite book is Deathly Hallows but my favorite movie is Sorcerer's Stone.

How does being a Hufflepuff affect the way you work?
A Hufflepuff works hard and values patience. You need both of those things as an artist, so I try my best to use those two traits when it comes to my mindset towards art. Hufflepuffs are also known for being friendly and welcoming, I feel like my drawing style illustrates that because it's fun and silly.

Favorite Harry Potter quote?
“You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” ― Ginny Weasley

What do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
During my time at FableVision I want to learn what it's like to work in a studio environment because it's something I've never been able to experience. More than anything though, I just want to grow as an artist/animator and be a sponge so I can soak up all the knowledge I can during my time here.

Favorite Dog

Why do you consider yourself a Hufflepuff?
I consider myself to be loyal, a little shy, and a diligent and hard worker. That and I have an affinity for food, sweets in particular.

What's your favorite Harry Potter book and movie?
My favorite would have to be Goblet of Fire.

How does being a Ravenclaw affect the way you work?
Despite my initial doubts, I actually find it quite fitting. I’m very hardworking, analytical, and practical when it comes to my work. I typically like to research and find references for things that I draw/ animate before actually getting started. I also have pretty nerdy interests such as studying anatomy and learning about ancient civilizations. (Minoan Crete in particular.)

Favorite Harry Potter quote?
“I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.” ― Rubeus Hagrid

What do you hope to gain from your time at FableVision?
What I had hoped to gain during my time at FableVision is the experience of what it’s like to work in a professional studio environment. FableVision has not only reached my expectations, but exceeded them as well. During the short time I’ve spent at FableVision, I’ve already learned far more than I ever imagined I would. I’ve learned how to properly collaborate with the other interns and pitch a project. I’ve learned new things about software I thought I was proficient in. I’ve even been exposed to new and upcoming artists that have already started impacting the way I think about art. I’ve already learned so much from the FableVision staff and I simply can’t wait to see what else they have to teach me.
