Start It Up

Client: Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE)

You have the next great idea and you know others will love it, but how do you execute it? Perhaps you shine in jewelry making, excel in coding, and crush it at rock climbing, but you need help with numbers, business plans, and executive decisions.

Spearheaded by the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE) and created in partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), online business simulator Start It Up takes high school students, college students, and small business owners through the process of creating and running a startup. This includes determining long-term business goals, fundraising, operational decisions, adaptations to unexpected circumstances, and more. The startup’s mentor assesses the company's health and finances and reveals whether the business succeeded or failed, and why.

Start It Up differs from a typical business game with its customizable experience, humor, lessons that teach students to think about their choices, unexpected scenarios that force students to adapt, and business aspects beyond procedural decisions, such as customer satisfaction. The game encourages replayability to demonstrate that 75% of businesses fail, but learning from mistakes and trying different methods can help students’ future businesses succeed. A retro-future design supplemented with a clean, graphic look makes the playthrough enjoyable and unique.

The interactive is available on GPB’s website and Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE) will use it in Georgia classrooms with supplementing teaching resources.
