It’s Thyme to Meet the Spring 2020 Interns!

Intern Logo 2.png

It may not be spring quite yet here in Boston, but a new group of spring interns have found their way to FableVision Studios! Their collective technical, art, marketing, and production skills—and shared love for the movie Ratatouille—are surely a recipe for success. We’re excited to see what masterpieces they cook up this semester! Read on to learn more about their internship goals, Boston-area recommendations, and who inspires them.

Esther Tzau

Hometown: Weston, MA
School & Major: Tufts University, Computer Science and American Studies (race and ethnic studies)
Position: Technical Intern
Portfolio: etzau01.github.io

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
When I was a senior in high school, my graphic design teacher suggested I check out FableVision because she knew I’d fall in love with their work and mission. Since then, I’ve been lurking on the InternVision blog, marveling at all the past intern projects, and reaching out to a few former interns. One of the interns I contacted was a technical intern who worked with Brian Grossman and had a really valuable experience. I applied, and it feels pretty surreal to be featured here now as an intern!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?

  • Gain familiarity with the Unity game engine, plugins, and the scripting languages Unity supports as I develop 2D games with the intern team

  • Use PHP, MySQL, and the Laravel web framework to build a working web application

  • Effectively and clearly communicate technical ideas/processes to team members

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My goal is to use my technical and creative skills to support the kind of empowering storytelling, education, and media that FableVision produces every single day. FableVision's team is constantly experimenting with new and emerging technologies, and in the first month I've already learned so much about the tech behind animation and games.

More About Esther!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Crêpes! I have many fond memories of my family gathered around the dining room table rolling fresh fruit, whipped cream, and Nutella into warm, buttery crepes.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: I love spending time in Chinatown. I grew up going to church in the neighborhood and often join community organizing efforts, learn Asian American histories, and share warm meals with people I love.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: "Feel The Vibe" by BJ The Chicago Kid. Homey and warm.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: My mama. She is my biggest support and best friend.

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I actually found the internship through the other spring Art & Animation Intern, Natalie! We've been friends for a long time now, and she told me about the internship a little while back. I figured I would go for it and apply, and I was lucky enough to get the position!

spring-break-barcelona-174+-+Gregory+Bond.jpg

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
I want to develop my animation and digital illustration skills while working at FableVision this semester. Animation and digital illustration have both always interested me, but were areas that I couldn't really study in my program at BU. So I'm super grateful that I can work on these skills at FableVision!

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
Participating in the Art & Animation Internship is awesome because I'm getting a ton of insight into how a professional animation studio functions! I'm interested specifically in children's entertainment, so FableVision is fantastic, as I'm getting a lot of exposure to children's educational animation.

More About Greg!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: To be honest, I'm not great at cooking. My go-to is usually turkey burgers, or some kind of fun bagel sandwich!

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: My absolute favorite place in Boston is the New England Aquarium. I used to go all the time when I was a kid, and I can't help but feel so inspired whenever I visit now.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: I've actually been getting really into K-Pop recently! Specifically, I can't stop listening to “Baby” by ASTRO.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: I have always looked up to the older members in my a cappella group at BU, In Achord! Ever since I was a freshman, I've always gone to them for advice, support, and really everything. They've definitely become my family at BU!

Janina Huang

Hometown: Boston, MA
School & Major: Boston University, English and Communication (emphasis in advertising)
Position: Marketing Intern

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I learned about FableVision my senior year of high school! My sister and I were researching animation studios in Boston, and FableVision popped up. When I saw the 2015 relaunch of Zoombinis in the FableVision portfolio, a game I loved as a kid, I was immediately interested. I’ve been following the studio and InternVision ever since. Now that I’m a senior in college, it’s exciting and pretty surreal to be here!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Social media writing! It can be daunting to stare down a blank piece of paper (or Google Doc), and I’m working on getting over that initial block and just writing the tweet! I’ve been having a blast so far, and I’ve learned so much from the edits Monica and Sarah give me. I’m also looking forward to our intern project! Developing and writing for games has been a dream of mine for a while now, and I’m so happy to see each of us interns shine in our respective roles.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My dream is to put as much good into the world as possible, so being at FableVision is certainly helping! On a professional level, FableVision’s mission and work embody so many things I care about: storytelling, education, and empathy, to name a few. Just being in the studio, listening to and learning from the people who work on these projects, is kind of the dream!

More About Janina!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Lately, I’ve been making a lot of soup.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum! It’s such a unique art museum with an interesting history.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “Rain” by Ben Platt

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: My high school English teacher and advisor, Dr. Proll! A major part of who I am—from my choice of study, to my love of writing, to the way I think about the world—is because of her wisdom and guidance.

Natalie Charewicz

Hometown: Chatham, NJ
School & Major: Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, English and Art (focus in illustration and animation)
Position: Art Intern
Portfolio: natcharewicz.com

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
I was following an artist on Twitter who had done an internship at FableVision previously and I found out about it after looking through their page! After that point, I got a bit hooked on InternVision and would constantly keep an eye out for updates and to see what all the interns were working on each semester.

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Learning how to work creatively as part of a bigger team! Making independent artwork for college classes is really different from being a part of a group project that involves pitching ideas, creating placeholder art, helping with scripts, and so many different moving parts for all areas of production. It’s a lot to juggle at once, but that’s part of the fun.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
This internship is definitely helping me improve my teamwork and collaboration skills, which are really important parts of any field. Plus I’m getting to work on my art in a different setting than what I’m used to, which is great for improving my skills.

More About Natalie!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: So it’s kind of bold of me to imply that I can make any dish *well*, but I really enjoy making crêpes, especially with my dad.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: This changes daily, but I think I have to go with getting brunch and/or coffee with friends (especially at @union; this is free promo. I love that restaurant), and then spending the day just goofing around pretty much anywhere.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: Right now it would have to be “Curiosity” by Amber Liu and “How To Love” by Day6!

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: Rachel Bloom! For those who don’t know her, she wrote and starred in the TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is a musical comedy and probably my favorite show of all time. It really inspires me that she was able to combine her love of acting and writing to basically live the best of both worlds. I hope to be able to do that with my own passions someday.

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
The lighthearted, passionate attitude in everything they do!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
I want to understand how to take client-driven creative projects from start to finish and it would be GREAT to get some familiarity with Unity and visual design.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
I dream of working on animated content for the clients that FableVision has worked with for years. This is my first time seeing how a studio of this caliber gets their projects done, and I feel like I'm stepping closer to my goals just by being here!

More About Rubin!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: Chocolate. Chip. Banana. Bread.

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: Scurry about in dark alleys.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “Coffee Shop” by Pizzagirl.

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: I’m the oldest, and the tallest, of four kids. But I look up to my brother and sisters. They’re my biggest role models. If they see this, they’ll never let me live it down…

Tell us about your journey here! What brought you to FableVision?
The name has definitely been floating around in our program at Harvard for a while now as a prestigious internship site for those who love and desire more experience in educational media. I shot my shot, and look where I am now!

What skills are you hoping to work on or develop during your internship?
Until now, I have dwelled mostly in the film marketing sphere. This is my first real professional chance to dig into the production side, and I'm beyond excited to get that landscape purview as well as the detailed hands-on experience.

Remy dreams of being a chef. How is your FableVision internship helping you build skills to get closer to your dream?
My dream...is to be in the room where it happens. More specifically, to be in the room of strategy and production when the day comes for a pilot children's TV show with Asian American characters and culture.

More About Sophie!

  • Anyone can cook! Favorite dish to make: I'm actually much more of a baker than a cook. And I do think my banana bread and carrot cake recipes aren't all that shabby!

  • Favorite place/thing to do in Boston: The Seaport District gives me proximity to water. The South End has personality. And I adore walking through (and getting lost in) the Arboretum. I also love how I can walk anywhere with some good music, look up at the stars, and just breathe in the air. Not a Boston-specific thing, but it's a favorite life thing I do.

  • Song you’re listening to on repeat: “La La Lost You” (the acoustic version) by NIKI, 88rising

  • Gusteau inspires Remy throughout his journey. Someone you look up to: Hands down, my mom. My life is inconceivably better for her wisdom and love in it.

FableVision Presents: Amelia's First Sleepover

Cover Photo 1.jpg

Sleepovers are a great opportunity for children to make memories together. They can stay up past their bedtimes, play fun games, and gorge on snacks. However, sleepovers may also cause anxiety for young kids, who often miss home. To help children develop the communication skills they need to share these feelings, the FableVision fall 2019 interns created a resource for parents and children alike.

Screen Shot 2019-12-10 at 10.28.15 AM.png

The fall 2019 interns are excited to announce our independent project Amelia’s First Sleepover! This interactive choose-your-own-adventure story helps kids overcome sleepover anxiety. Through four scenarios, Amelia and her friends solve four common sleepover problems, learn anxiety-relieving techniques, and create a strong support network. As the reader, you decide the storyline and choose who you want to solve each problem. On each replay, you can learn new ways to support nervous friends. With colorful illustrations and diverse character representations, this interactive will create an enriching experience for you and your family.

The Amelia’s First Sleepover team consists of:

  • Doi Park: Character Art, Story

  • Elva Si: Marketing, Story/Script, Scheduling

  • Joyce Hu: Background Art, Story

  • Kristen Schretter: Story/Script, Coding, Marketing, Music Composition

  • Will Nichols: Story/Script, Coding

The intern team worked collaboratively this fall to brainstorm, develop the script, design characters and backgrounds, code materials, and create a marketing plan for the project. The process was challenging, but we’re proud to present this great project to all of you.

We would also like to thank our internship program coordinators, who patiently gave suggestions and feedback throughout the development of our project. Their encouragement inspired us to strive forward.

Learn more about the internship program here.

Now, are you ready for this engaging interactive choose your own adventure story? Check out the project screenshots below and click here to join the best sleepover ever with Amelia and her friends!

As Halloween approaches, murmurs fill the air about the eccentric intern family in their macabre mansion on the hill (i.e. the table in the corner of the office). These are no ordinary interns. With roots in drawing, experience in the live-action film, and recent expansion into animation, they’re brewing a unique independent intern project before you can snap twice.

What secrets is this mysterious intern family hiding? Enter if you dare...

doi+1.jpg

Doi Park

  • Hometown: Los Angeles, California

  • School & Major(s): Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) - Animation

  • Position: Art Intern

What brought you to FableVision Studios?
During my first year at MassArt (and first year in Boston in general), I looked around to see what the animation scene here was like and stumbled upon FableVision. I watched a ton of animation on the site and fell in love with what they were doing, so I sent in an application!

By Halloween, you'll have been at FableVision for almost two months. Tell us about a moment at the office that came as a 'treat' to you!
The biggest treat has been talking with the other interns and seeing what projects they’re working on, both in and out of the studio!

What fang-tastic skills do you want to work on during your FableVision internship this semester?
I’m excited about the intern project—it’ll give me the opportunity to be less shy around others in a creative environment!

Each Addams family character is odd in their own way. What fun weirdness do you bring to the table?
I can do a Donald Duck impression, but ONLY when he’s screaming, and no dialogue…yet.

It’s an average “Wednesday” -- what are you working on?
Well, I have class from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., but afterward, I’ll doodle on my iPad until the inevitable “You’ve-Got-Something-Due-Tomorrow” feeling settles in at midnight.

doi+2.jpg

More about Doi!

  • Things you want to add to the wall of inspiration?

If I had to narrow it down to just 3 things, it’d be: frames from the Phantom Tollbooth animated film, the hands from Iron Giant, and a collage of my favorite Japanese animation art books!

  • Best Halloween candy? Twix.

  • Best costume idea you’ve had?

I dressed up as Wirt from last year but asked a policeman to take a photo with me, so I became Wirt…on the run.

  • Cartoon/video game you still love from your childhood: Whatever Happened to...Robot Jones?

  • Favorite horror movie? Hereditary (2018).

elva 1.JPG

Elva Si

  • Hometown: Nanjing, China

  • School & Major(s): Tufts University - Psychology, Child Studies & Human Development, minor in Entrepreneurial Leadership Studies

  • Position: Marketing Intern

What brought you to FableVision Studios?
Before the start of this semester, my Tufts major advisor Julie Dobrow (a good friend of FableVision’s!) connected me with Sarah Ditkoff, FableVision’s communications director, for the marketing intern position. I am excited to find a team of passionate people who care about telling authentic stories and producing meaningful children’s media. Here we go, FableVisionaries!

By Halloween, you'll have been at FableVision for almost two months. Tell us about a moment at the office that came as a 'treat' to you!
FableVision satisfies my curiosity about educational media. I am grateful that I get to write blogs and tweets for individual studio projects, including game-based learning and assessments, animation, and short films to promote attitudes and knowledge on mental health, environment protection, and more.

FableVision also provides me with treats outside of all these great projects! The team invites me to join weekly staff and production intern meetings and supports all the interns in making our own independent project. That’s to say, I am able to not only improve my marketing skills, but also experience a real studio workflow.

What fang-tastic skills do you want to work on during your FableVision internship this semester?
While many of my former marketing experiences were based in Chinese companies, FableVision gives me a fantastic opportunity to compare platform selection, writing styles, and marketing tactics under two different cultural contexts. I am sure FableVision will be a great practice field for my writing skills, as well as organization and planning skills. Shout out to Sarah and Monica for helping me polish my language and extending my knowledge of content marketing!

Each Addams family character is odd in their own way. What fun weirdness do you bring to the table?
I am a super dreamer. I dream a lot and can recall around 80% of my dreams when I wake up.

It’s an average “Wednesday” -- what are you working on?
On a regular Wednesday, I have to get up at 7 a.m. to catch the T to work. This Wednesday, I am: 1) drafting a blog for an about-to-launch game; 2) brainstorming more blog ideas; 3) finishing up these questions for this blog. It’s cool to be one of the first players of a new game and to be able to come up with creative ideas for new content at the studio.

More about Elva!

  • Things you want to add to the wall of inspiration? Pickle Rick!

  • Best Halloween candy? Gummy bears!

  • Best costume you’ve worn?

My best costume would be Hanfu, a traditional dress of Chinese Han people. My friends think that I look like Mulan when I wear Hanfu, what do you think?

  • Cartoon/video game you still love from your childhood: SpongeBob and all of the Disney princess films!

  • Favorite horror movie? No...I can’t watch horror movies.

joyce.JPG

Joyce Hu

  • Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida

  • School & Major(s): Boston University - Graphic Design, minor in Computer Science

  • Position: Art Intern

What brought you to FableVision Studios?
My friend told me about this internship, and after looking into the studio online, I knew that I wanted to work here! I was so surprised to see that they made the Zoombinis remake, a game I loved in my childhood.

By Halloween, you'll have been at FableVision for almost two months. Tell us about a moment at the office that came as a 'treat' to you!
A fun moment for me was from the first day of my internship. Right when I first walked in, I ran into the other art intern, Doi, who was starting on the same day as me. I saw a Fire Force charm on her backpack and immediately, I could tell that she was going to be a fun co-intern. It was crazy how many common interests we had!

What fang-tastic skills do you want to work on during your FableVision internship this semester?
I'm finally taking the time to dive into animation and learn the process of it overall! If I have time, I would also love to get a basic rundown of unity or character design.

joyce+2.jpg

Each Addams family character is odd in their own way. What fun weirdness do you bring to the table?
I'm a huge fan of animation and manga, and am always willing to give recommendations if prompted! I also almost always have a fruit and nuts Nature Valley granola bar in the mornings for breakfast. I'm also usually very bad at controlling my own volume, but I always end up whispering when I'm working at the studio!

It’s an average “Wednesday” -- what are you working on?
If I'm at the studio, I'll be working on an animation workshop exercise or working on the ~secret~ internship project. On my days outside the studio, I'll be chugging away at graphic design and computer science assignments for my classes.

More about Joyce!

  • Things you want to add to the wall of inspiration? A copy of an I Spy book.

  • Best Halloween candy? Kit Kats.

  • Best costume idea you’ve had?

Pretending I dressed up as something by just wearing all black -- the cheapest and easiest thing to do :^)

  • Cartoon/video game you still love from your childhood: Xiaolin Showdown.

  • Favorite horror movie? Coraline (I'm too much of a baby to watch actual horror movies).

kristen 2.jpg

Kristen Schretter

  • Hometown: Ridgewood, NJ

  • School & Major(s): Tufts University - Physics, Film and Media Studies, Music Sound and Culture (yes all three are majors)

  • Position: Marketing Intern

What brought you to FableVision Studios?
I love animated media and am interested in working in children’s television, so interning at FableVision seemed like the perfect opportunity! I thought I’d missed the application deadline for fall, but when Professor Julie Dobrow at Tufts let me know that Sarah was still looking for marketing interns, I emailed her right away, and am really happy to be here.

By Halloween, you'll have been at FableVision for almost two months. Tell us about a moment at the office that came as a 'treat' to you!
Assisting in a college visit was a really enriching experience. Not only did I get to learn more about FableVision events and how we market ourselves to students, but I also got to participate in the visit myself, learning from Hannah’s excellent animation demonstration of Paper Girls! I’ve also enjoyed brainstorming with the other interns on the intern project.

What fang-tastic skills do you want to work on during your FableVision internship this semester?
Writing, writing, writing! It’s something I’m passionate about but haven’t had the opportunity to actively improve through feedback in ages. The tips for clear, concise writing I’m receiving from Monica and Sarah are invaluable. I also hope to gain a better understanding of the production and art sides of the studio. as well as the marketing one. I find everything FableVision does fascinating.

kristen 1.jpg

Each Addams family character is odd in their own way. What fun weirdness do you bring to the table?
I tap dance! I could do that on a table...as long as it’s a sturdy one.

It’s an average “Wednesday” -- what are you working on?
Unfortunately Wednesday is my off day at the studio, but there’s still a lot going on! In the morning, I usually wake up, think about jogging, and then fall back asleep. After finally getting out of bed, I have a meeting for STOMP, a Tufts program through which I teach elementary schoolers engineering lessons. I then have a lot of vending machine coffee and classes. When I get back in the evening, I play random stuff on the piano to come up with ideas for my music thesis!

kristen 3.jpg

More about Kristen!

  • Things you want to add to the wall of inspiration? The How To Train Your Dragon concept art.

  • Best Halloween candy? 3 Musketeers.

  • Best costume you’ve worn?

Last year, I was Schrodinger’s cat, which I loved in theory. In practice, though, I looked like a cat with a black eye.

  • Cartoon/video game you still love from your childhood:

Scooby Doo! (I would say Avatar the Last Airbender, but I watched that at age 17 so that’s not exactly my childhood).

  • Favorite horror movie? Alien or Silence of the Lambs.

will.jpg

Will Nichols

  • Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana

  • School & Major(s): Emerson College - Media Arts Production

  • Position: Production Intern

What brought you to FableVision Studios?
I have been really passionate about children’s media throughout my time in college, so when I started looking for internships, I found FableVision and immediately fell in love with the studio’s projects. I thought it would be a perfect fit!

By Halloween, you'll have been at FableVision for almost two months. Tell us about a moment at the office that came as a 'treat' to you!
I really enjoyed jumping into learning about the various projects that FableVision is working on and getting to be a part of them from the start. From the first day, I have absorbed so much from various meetings and tasks I have been given, and it has really allowed me to get comfortable in the studio quickly.

What fang-tastic skills do you want to work on during your FableVision internship this semester?
I am interested in and have already learned a ton about the production process of games, which has been really great. I am also interested in learning more about production management and how to effectively produce multiple projects at the same time.

Each Addams family character is odd in their own way. What fun weirdness do you bring to the table?
In my free time, I really like coming up with new recipes that haven’t been thought of yet and doing lots of experiments to make them work. I am the proud creator of the Graham Cracker Bagel and a few other recipes that I have found successful.

It’s an average “Wednesday” -- what are you working on?
I spend a lot of my time at FableVision working with the studio’s producers and production assistants on various animation and game projects currently in production. Depending on the week, I could work on or attend meetings for two or three different projects throughout the day, which really helps me to get exposure to all the different types of projects the studio produces. There are also weekly production intern meetings on Wednesdays, where we learn about how certain studio departments operate from different members of FableVision.

More about Will!

  • Things you want to add to the wall of inspiration? My favorite book, The 21 Balloons!

  • Best Halloween candy? Jolly Ranchers.

  • Best costume idea you’ve had? The Teen Titans Robin costume my 6 year old self wore.

  • Cartoon/video game you still love from your childhood: Recess.

  • Favorite horror movie? Halloween!

FableVision Presents: New Artitude

IMG_2318.jpg

We’re excited to announce the launch of New Artitude, an interactive web story created by the 2019 summer interns. New Artitude is an online narrative that explores the definition of art and introduces three characters who each create in ways that challenge conventions.

Highlighting the works of a chef, a hip hop dancer, and a painter who uses recycled materials, New Artitude elevates each character to the same artistic status, as they all present their work in a local showcase. This project aims to show viewers that anyone can make something amazing with whatever materials or abilities they have, and that the definition of art is bigger than some people may believe.

The New Artitude team consists of:

  • Amanda Pedersen: Character Art, Story

  • Kat Hardie: Sound Designer, Composer, Production, UI/UX

  • Orsi Nagy: Marketing, Story/Script, Sound Designer

  • Nathalie Ye: Production, Programming, UI/UX

  • Gabriela Romero Gonzalez: Marketing, Social Media, Story/Script

  • Mickie Kryger: Background Art, Story

The interns worked throughout this summer to develop a script, character designs and backgrounds, code, sound materials, and a marketing plan and logo for the project, among other moving parts. Each duo of interns focused on their area of specialty—Marketing, Art, or Production—while also learning and exploring new or different skills. We all got the chance to take on a challenge and add to our skill set while collaborating on something we are all proud of.

A very big thank you to the internship program coordinators, who gave feedback and tips throughout the development of the project and were great sources of inspiration and encouragement:

Learn more about the internship program here.

You can also check out some images from the project and the discussion questions below for some guidance on how to embed these ideas of practice and self-confidence in conversations with friends, mentees, or children, grounded in plot points from the story.
