Rhythm Explorer
Client: Carnegie Hall
Practice your rhythm skills, discover instruments from different countries, and become a world traveler in “Rhythm Explorer!” Created by Carnegie Hall in collaboration with FableVision for K-2 players, this fun, interactive rhythm game features six songs from Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers program. Through this game, players develop their rhythm skills while exploring diverse musical traditions and instruments from around the world.
Meet Rhythmo, a "metro-gnome" game guide. Players watch Rhythmo for help while they play songs, as he always keeps time in the corner of the screen. Players choose from six song options, and learn facts about the musical traditions and featured instruments in the song. For example, when selecting “El Pescador,” Rhythmo tells players about the musician Gregorio from Bogota, Colombia. Rhythmo says, “He is going to perform ‘El Pescador,’ an example of a type of music called cumbia. Cumbia started on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. ‘El Pescador’ features the tambora and the maracas. Let’s go check them out!” At the end of the song, players get a rating out of three stars on their performance.
Carnegie Hall’s education team and FableVision worked closely with the six musicians to decide which instruments to highlight in each song. Developed using the Step Mania engine, FableVision customized the engine for a younger audience by reducing the number of notes from four to three and increasing the timing window for hits. This game incorporates a 2D collage style that is both engaging and not overstimulating.
“Rhythm Explorer” is web-based and available on the Carnegie Hall Kids website.
