Help an alien return home by conducting successful trades with other countries to gather the resources needed to power their spaceship!
Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) and Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE) collaborated with FableVision Studios to create “Let’s Trade!,” a fun and engaging educational HTML game for middle and high school students to understand how international trade shapes the world around them. By negotiating trades to help the alien return home, players learn about specialization, trade barriers, comparative advantage, and the trade-offs that come with every deal.
After an alien named Neila crashes their ship in Georgia, the player must help them return home. Players build import and export routes from the United States to other countries to collect resources that create SMILEs (Space Made Items for Laughs and Excitement). Trading SMILEs increases global joy, which is the fuel Nelia’s spaceship runs on. To create trade routes, players play the “Handshake Minigame.” They choose up to three potential trading partners, whose hands appear on the right side of the screen, while the player’s hand appears on the left. The goal is to shake hands with one partner and establish a successful trade route. Players continue creating import and export routes until global joy reaches 100%, meaning Neila’s ship is full of fuel, and they can go home.
“Let’s Trade!” incorporates five Georgia Standards of Excellence: SS7E1, SS7E2, SS7E5, SS7E8, and SS7E1.a. The game also includes a glossary that defines important trade terms from the curriculum. “Let’s Trade!” is free to play on the GPB website.
