Cyberchase Fractions Quest

Partners: FableVision, THIRTEEN/WNET New York Public Media, Educational Development Center’s Center for Children and Technology

Cyberchase Fractions Quest, based on the popular, award-winning PBS KIDS math series Cyberchase, is an immersive game combining a high-stakes adventure story with a research-based approach to fractions learning. Created for use in Grades 3 and 4, the game is available on FableVision Games and designed for use in both schools and homes, and for all major tablet, smartphone, and desktop/laptop platforms. In the game, students are on a quest to defeat Cyberchase villain Hacker and save the day using fractions and problem-solving skills. Incorporating the latest findings on how children best learn fractions, and ongoing input from the project advisors, the game’s story-based challenges cover key content areas.

The content progression in Cyberchase Fractions Quest follows the scope and sequence of fractions learning in Grade 3—from fair shares through comparing and ordering—aligning closely with the Common Core State Standards for Grade 3 Mathematics. This will allow the game to be used in Grade 3 and for review in Grade 4. Throughout the game, children repeatedly encounter and use fractions problems in three contexts: fractions of areas/regions (such as shapes); fractions of sets (groups of objects); and fractions on a number line.
