Secrets of the Sea
Client: Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access

Most people will never experience first-hand the beauty of a coral reef, but for some scientists, exploring this wonder is a part of their day-to-day life. Now, through the Smithsonian’s Secrets of the Sea, aligned to next generation science standards (NGSS), visitors have the opportunity to take a close look at the tiny, free-floating zooplankton that reside in coral reefs. In partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access, FableVision created 2D and 3D artwork for this immersive, digital coral reef exploration exhibit.
With reference art and scientific information from the Smithsonian, FableVision designed the simple but scientifically accurate 2D zooplankton. Both kinds of zooplankton were designed using a variety of greens and yellows to represent the plant-based makeup of the plankton. The studio also designed, animated, rigged, and skinned 3D models for 3D videos that play alongside the exhibit. With all the engaging designs, this exhibit transports viewers from the comfort of their homes into a new world.
