Paint ‘n’ Play
Client: National Gallery of Art

Have you ever wanted to paint the night sky like Van Gogh, or capture the essence of the English countryside like John Constable? Visitors of the National Gallery of Art (NGA) can now create original digital artworks inspired by real artists, art styles, and artistic movements. FableVision-developed interactive, Paint ‘n’ Play, allows museum visitors to create pieces using the palettes and brushes of famous painters of the past. Works by Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, Cecilia Beaux, Fede Galizia, John Constable, and Van Gogh are featured in the interactive.
Visitors begin by selecting the painting they want to draw inspiration from. Users learn about the artist’s style and history by doing rather than reading, and create their work with their selected artist’s palette and brush strokes. Every selectable brush stroke style in Paint ‘n’ Play was individually created by FableVision by using scans of physical paint strokes. Different digital brushes recreate the organic and textured look of each artist’s unique painting style. Users leave the exhibit with a deeper understanding of the history and style of the pieces at the National Gallery of Art.
