Fly Five Animated Character Shorts

Client: Fly Five

Fly Five, a kindergarten-eighth grade social and emotional learning curriculum developed by Responsive Classroom, believes that children can be successful by learning a set of social and emotional competencies, like cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control (C.A.R.E.S.). To welcome students to its Fly Five Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum, Responsive Classroom turned to FableVision for a series of introductory character animations.

Nine of the animations follow characters Anisa, Blake, Doba, Gabriel, Imani, Jade, Kofi, Luna, and Shen as they grow from their early childhood to teenage years. The characters come from different backgrounds, family structures, physical/mental abilities, and interests, so that every student can see themselves authentically represented. For example, Doba is a Navajo who writes songs about nature, Blake loves skateboarding and has two dads, and Imani has four siblings and a talent for theater. To bring the characters to life, FableVision designed clean, contemporary, and friendly animations with painterly backgrounds to match the established character design.

The 10th video spotlights emotions everyone experiences, explaining why we feel them and how these emotions help us. FableVision used Responsive Classroom’s expressive, brightly-colored emoticons that represent emotions ranging from joy, trust, and surprise, to anger, sadness, and disgust.
